  Tolland, CT and Boston (April 29, 2009) – Leahy Management Group, a Connecticut-based full-service association management firm serving public interest organizations, and the Liberty Square Group, a Boston-based company specializing in public affairs, today announced a strategic alliance that will increase the scope and range of their client service offerings.

About James P. Leahy
As founding partner and president of Leahy Management Group, Jim Leahy, CAE brings more than 20 years experience in association management, lobbying and grassroots organizing to our client efforts. With an extensive history representing nonprofit groups, Jim specializes in building strong organizations, as well as all aspects of advocacy efforts, including designing and implementing effective lobbying and grassroots issue campaigns.
Jim is a Certified Association Executive, a designation from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). This is the highest level of professional achievement available from the Society. CAEs must demonstrate a high level of knowledge, ethical fitness, and leadership to earn and maintain the designation.

Professional accomplishments include a successful effort to secure $5 million in state funding for the renovation of the historic Westport Country Playhouse. Mr. Leahy may be best known as the former executive director of the Connecticut Public Interest Research Group known as ConnPIRG. During his tenure, the statewide environmental and consumer group enjoyed the most significant growth in its history. A key victory during his leadership was the passage of the first in the nation toy safety labeling law to protect children under the age of three from small toy parts. The legislation served as the basis for federal legislation, extending the protection to children across the country.

Jim is a graduate of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. A native of Milford, Connecticut, he lives in Tolland, Connecticut.


About Scott M. Ferson
Scott Ferson is President of The Liberty Square Group, and provides strategic public and government relations counsel to a broad range of clients. Mr. Ferson brings over twenty years of experience working with corporations, elected and appointed officials, community groups, and the media to reach solutions to problems both straightforward and complex, through a strong understanding of how the public responds to information.

A former Press Secretary to Senator Edward M. Kennedy, he has also provided communications counsel to Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray and Congressman Stephen F. Lynch. He has also been the spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on their Boston Temple Construction, for Christy Mihos during his successful battle to retain his seat on the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, and for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. His corporate clients include AIG, GenCorp, Beacon Capital Partners, and the Center for Technology Commercialization.

Mr. Ferson has worked on numerous campaigns, including the Patrick/Murray campaign in 2006 and the 1988 and 2004 presidential campaigns of Congressman Richard Gephardt. As a Democratic strategist, he has appeared on Channel 2's Greater Boston, News Night on New England Cable News, CN8, and Fox 25.

A resident of Belmont Massachusetts, he currently serves on the town's Library Foundation Board and is a past chair of the board of the First Church in Belmont, Unitarian Universalist. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
