Jay McCarthy

As the Liberty Square Group’s Senior Vice President for Federal Government Relations, Jay McCarthy provides strategic guidance, policy and appropriations assistance to a wide variety of clients.  Mr. McCarthy is a thirteen-year veteran of the United States Senate, who most recently served as a senior advisor to Senator Paul G. Kirk, Jr. (D-MA).

Prior to his time with Senator Kirk, Mr. McCarthy fulfilled several roles for the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) over more than seven years, including two years as a senior advisor and two years as the Senator's political director, a position through which he assisted with Senator Kennedy's 2006 re-election. Mr. McCarthy was originally hired by Kennedy's office in the spring of 2002 to serve as Senator Kennedy's director of economic development, and he retained oversight responsibilities of the Senator's Massachusetts agenda, including appropriations, for the duration of his seven-plus years with Kennedy's office.

Prior to joining Senator Kennedy's staff, Mr. McCarthy served for more than two years as director of economic development for Senator Charles E. Schumer
(D-NY), and as the lead Schumer staffer on efforts to secure federal resources for the reconstruction and renewal of New York City in the aftermath of 9/11. Mr. McCarthy began his career on Capitol Hill as an intern in the office of the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) in the fall of 1996, and was brought on staff in 1997. He ultimately served as Senator Moynihan's legislative assistant for transportation and public works.

A native of New Bedford, MA, Mr. McCarthy is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and, to complete the cliché, is a big-time Boston sports fan.
