The excellent press coverage from the event presented an accurate account of church activities and beliefs; sparked interest in the church; explained the ongoing litigation in a non-sensational way; and showed the opposition for what they were– extreme, and limited to a few fringe voices.
Most importantly the press coverage moved beyond stories of a local controversy involving a religion most people know little about, and emphasized the church’s local history and ongoing growth. Mitt Romney’s tour of the temple for Ted Kennedy went a long way to putting to rest the religious issues raised in the 1994 Senate race, as well to move beyond discussion of the steeple, one of the major debates surrounding the Temple’s construction.
